MacKinnon Clan History:
The Clan MacKinnon is considered a historical Highland clan. They are descended from the ancient royal house of Alpin and are associated with the Western Isles, particularly Mull and Skye. The clan played a significant role in Scottish history, including supporting Robert the Bruce and participating in both the Jacobite risings and the Civil Wars.
The MacKinnons are believed to be a branch of the Siol Alpin, descendants of Kenneth MacAlpin, the first King of Scotland. The name MacKinnon is derived from the Gaelic for "son of Fingon".
They were strongly associated with the Western Isles, particularly Mull and Skye. Their historic seat was Dunakin (also known as Castle Moil) on Skye.
They supported Robert the Bruce and were rewarded with lands on Skye after his victory at Bannockburn.
They played a role in the Jacobite risings of the 17th and 18th centuries.
They were involved in the Civil Wars on the Royalist side.
