MacLaine Clan History:
The MacLaine clan is historical. It is a branch of the larger MacLean clan, with the MacLaine of Lochbuie being a distinct sept with its own history and traditions. They are one of the oldest clans in the Scottish Highlands and have a long and rich history, particularly associated with the Isle of Mull.
The MacLaine of Lochbuie branch is descended from Hector, brother of Lachlan who founded the Duart branch of the MacLeans. They received their lands from the Lord of the Isles in the 14th century.
While sharing a common ancestor with the MacLeans, the MacLaines of Lochbuie developed their own identity and became a separate clan.
The MacLaines of Lochbuie were involved in feuds with the MacLeans of Duart, even resulting in violence. However, they also experienced periods of prosperity, with one Chief notably making a fortune in Java in the 19th century and using it to pay off debts.
The clan has a strong presence on the Isle of Mull, with Moy Castle serving as their historic seat for centuries. They also played a role in Scottish history, including the Jacobite risings.
